THE ROTARY Club of Worcester raised more than £20,000 for a charity close to their hearts at a glitzy dinner.

About 330 people came along to the event at The Bank House in Bransford last Friday (October 25) which was in aid of The Prostate Cancer Research Centre.

The charity was chosen after Jonathan Sington, president of the Rotary Club of Worcester, was treated for prostate cancer in the past.

Former Conservative Party politician, Michael Portillo was also in attendance as a guest speaker.

The evening included two auctions, in which House of Lords members offered tours around the historic building in the capital, Worcester MP Robin Walker offered a tour around the Commons, a property in Marbella for a week was sold for £5,000 and a prize winning onion, weighing three ounces and two pounds, was sold for £300.

Rotarian, Charles Taylor, said: “We had a lot of sponsorship from local companies, the hotel were also very generous in sponsoring us, as well as the money made from the auctions.

“The president, Jonathan Sington, had been treated for prostate cancer and was interested in raising awareness and helping out people with the same condition.

“I got told that the treatment and survival rates for prostate cancer has not improved since 1940, whereas the survival rates for breast cancer has improved dramatically, so we are trying to raise more awareness in this.”

The Rotary Club have also taken part in sponsored runs and walks to raise money for the charity.
