FIREFIGHTERS have thanked a good samaritan who helped save the life of a woman found in the River Teme at Powick Mill.
The man jumped into the water to try and rescue the woman before the emergency services arrived at the scene just after 11am on Tuesday (September 17).
One fire crew from Worcester attended along with water rescue boats and other teams from across the region.
Station commander Toby Kempton praised the heroics of the man who kept the woman afloat.
“The water rescue crews from Worcester, Upton and Evesham were immediately deployed to access and stabilise the casualty in the river,” he said.
“She was being held at that time by a local resident who spotted her and selflessly went in to the water to offer assistance before the arrival of the emergency services.
“Crews soon accessed and stabilised the casualty whilst handing the local resident who assisted the woman over to paramedic crews for symptoms of hypothermia.”
Mr Kempton said the rescue had been hazardous because of the steep river banks.
“This was a particularly difficult rescue due to the access limitations of the embankment,” he added.
“A dynamic multi-agency approach was necessary to perform a timely and specialised rescue.
“Praise is definitely due not only to the attending crews, but more so to the resident who found the casualty and selflessly went to her rescue.”
