Contract talks continue as Gold warns 'core group' need to stay at club

DIRECTOR of rugby Gary Gold revealed he has had ‘positive’ contract talks with players.

The Worcester chief admitted he needs his ‘core group’ of players to stay at the club so they can ‘kick on’ after a poor start to the Premiership.

Back row Sam Lewis was the first player to pen a new deal with the club last week and Gold believes consecutive Premiership wins over Northampton and Leicester will encourage others to follow suit.

“Obviously looking at things going forward it’s not just about the week in, week out games, it’s also about talking to the players and seeing where we’re going in terms of our planning preparation. It’s (recruitment) looking in a healthy state going forward and we’ve had some positive talks,” said Gold.

“It’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation at the moment. We need this core group of players to stick with us. If that happens we can kick on, but they also want to know that the club is in a healthy position which I believe it is.

“I think winning consistently will help (players to sign contracts). Everybody at the club is ambitious, we aspire to be a mid-table team. The talks are progressing well and we’ll be making some announcements in the near future.”

Gold also revealed the announcement on his successor as director of rugby is reaching its conclusion.

“(The director of rugby position) will be resolved in a reasonable space of time,” he said.

“I’m obviously not involved in that process but I know the guys behind the scenes are working hard and having various conversations. It’s not a decision that’s going to be left lingering.”
