Work will cause delays

Worcester Editorial 4th Dec, 2020   0

MOTORISTS have been warned of road closures ahead of a new footbridge being lowered into place over Worcester’s Southern Link Road.

The Broomhall Way footbridge, once complete, will allow for better and safer crossing of the busy road for pedestrians and cyclists. It will provide a link between the new commercial and housing development on the south of the A4440 to Power Park in St Peter’s on the north.

To allow the bridge to be moved into place, a full closure of Broomhall Way between the Ketch and Norton roundabouts will be in place from 9pm tonight (Friday) to 5am on Monday (December 7).

A diversion will be signposted and advanced signs will be on display ahead of the closure. St Peter’s Drive, Norton Road and Crookbarrow Way will remain open throughout.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member for Economy and Infrastructure, said: “The major milestones on the Southern Link Road scheme are coming thick and fast, with yet another bridge to improve walking and cycling connectivity, being moved into place.

“This bridge, alongside two further bridges, a new underpass and a much wider shared walking and cycle path between the Ketch roundabout and Powick roundabout, will vastly improve the walking and cycling routes in the area.

“This is in addition to the scheme providing a dual carriageway for traffic from the M5 to Powick roundabout.”

Once the main span of the bridge is in place, further works will be needed before the bridge is opened including the construction of approach ramps and wider connection to the existing highway network on both sides of the road.

Along with raising the footpaths in Power Park above the area which floods frequently, other works include the installation of a land drainage system, repositioning of the football pitch and landscaping.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions and the need to adhere to social distancing guidance, council chiefs have asked people not to congregate to see the bridge lift take place.
