Record number of breakdown calls made today (Monday) as snow and ice strikes Britain

A RECORD number of breakdown calls were made today (Monday) because of the snow and ice, Green Flag has revealed.

Up to 13,800 breakdown calls were made to breakdown providers across the UK by 12pm on December 11 since midnight, with the figure set to rise.

The record number follows a busy weekend where 49,800 breakdown calls were made during Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Simon Henrick, Head of News at Green Flag, said: “We expect this figure to rise dramatically as the conditions worsen throughout the day and night.

“With the cold weather and icy conditions causing difficulties for drivers across the country, it is incredibly important that motorists stay safe on the roads.

“By following safety precautions such as ensuring tyres are up to the job, checking fluids, and allowing extra time for braking, drivers can ensure they do everything possible to avoid an accident on the road.

“At Green Flag, we always advise drivers to check the weather conditions before driving and avoid driving in freezing weather if possible.”
