Raising roof on centenary

SCHOOLCHILDREN from across Worcestershire raised the roof at a sell-out charity fund-raising concert at Worcester Cathedral to commemorate the centenary of the First World War Armistice.

Voices of Remembrance was the culmination of a special partnership project between Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra (WSO), Worcester Cathedral and the Rivers CE Academy Trust schools and was sponsored by Worcestershire Ambassadors.

In the first half of the concert Hymn to the Fallen by John Williams from the film Saving Private Ryan and A Shropshire Lad by George Butterworth were followed by Remember Them, which comprised poems written by children and set to music by composer Laura Rossi, who attended the event.

Organiser and WSO member Paul West said: “The children were the stars of the show. None of them had sung in public before but they raised the cathedral roof, demonstrating with passion to an audience of almost 500 how they will Remember Them.”

“This very moving concert brought all corners of the Worcestershire community together.

“All performers sang, played and read their hearts out in a truly special evening, it was a humbling experience,” said musical director Keith Slade.

Voices of Remembrance raised £2,000 for the Worcestershire branch of SSAFA, The Royal British Legion and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.
