Worcester city councillor nominated for BBC Make a Difference Award

A WORCESTER city councillor has been nominated for a BBC Make a Difference Award in recognition of his dedication to protecting and enhancing the local environment.

The nomination was submitted by Worcester resident Jon Taylor, who wanted to recognise Coun John Rudge’s work restoring the neglected pond at Corfe Avenue.

Jon said: “I wanted to nominate John because of the incredible work he has done at Corfe Avenue. He took on an overgrown and neglected pond and, with the help of a small team of volunteers, transformed it into a wildlife haven.

The results of his hard work and dedication are impressive, and I felt it deserved recognition.”

The Corfe Avenue project, in St Nicholas, was led entirely by Coun Rudge and local volunteers, who gave up their time to clear years of overgrowth and restore the pond for the benefit of wildlife and the local community.

As a member of Worcester City Council’s Environment Committee, Coun Rudge has championed projects to enhance biodiversity across St Nicholas ward and the wider Warndon Villages area.

He is also a regular participant in Warndon Wombles community litter picks.

He has also been a driving force behind efforts to restore Offerton Lane Nature Reserve.

The site, which includes two balancing ponds managing surface water from the M5 motorway and Warndon Villages, had become heavily overgrown after years of neglect.

Volunteers from Worcester Environmental Group have helped clear sections of overgrown vegetation, while ecological surveys for protected species, including Great Crested Newts, are being undertaken before major restoration work begins.

With the purchase requisition now submitted, residents can look forward to seeing the nature reserve restored as a haven for wildlife once again.

Coun Rudge said: “I’m honoured to have been nominated, but this recognition really belongs to the volunteers who have worked alongside me.

“Whether restoring the pond at Corfe Avenue, caring for Offerton Lane or taking part in community litter picks, it’s amazing what can be achieved when people come together to look after the places they care about.”

The BBC Make a Difference Awards celebrate people who go above and beyond to improve life in their communities.
