YOUNGSTERS from Worcester RFC competed in the Defender Rising Stars Cup hosted by Bath Rugby in partnership with PREM Rugby.

Hundreds of aspiring young rugby stars descended upon Salisbury RFC as 19 clubs from across the southwest took part in a day of competitive rugby.

The annual under-11s and under-12s festival marks one of a series of nationwide events hosted by PREM Rugby clubs.

The events provide young players with the opportunity to experience playing within a professional environment against teams from outside of their immediate local area.

And the under-11 teams were judged on rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

The focus was on development and participation rather than match results.

Somerton RFC won the under-11 competition while hosts Salisbury triumphed in the under-12 festival.

Bath Rugby players Thomas du Toit, Will Jeanes, Jasper Spandler and Bernard van der Linde handed out prizes to the young players.

Worcester coach, Aiden Ruddock said: “It’s well organised, the kids are having great fun, the refereeing’s been superb and we have sunshine as well. What more can we ask for?”

Worcester under-12 player, Joseph added: “It was very good, we’ve had three good games of rugby and the weather was on our side.

“It was all a bit tight at the start, but then once we got one more try, it was a bit more comfortable and then the last game, it was very comfortable for us because we destroyed them.”

Since the first Defender Rising Stars Festival in 2008, more than 125,000 children have taken part. Some have even gone on to play professionally for PREM Rugby clubs.
