RUGBY UNION - Worcester Warriors score single try in defeat at Nottingham in difficult conditions

WORCESTER Warriors saw their four-game winning run come to an end following a 22-7 defeat away at Nottingham.

Matt Everard’s side produced their lowest points total in a game this season as Will Reed crossed for the away’s only try at the Lady Bay Sports Ground.

And the result means Worcester sit third in the Champ Rugby table, three points behind second-placed Bedford Blues.

The game took place in difficult conditions with Nottingham’s wet and muddy pitch not lending itself to free-flowing rugby.

Nottingham scored the game’s first try on six minutes as Luke Rokomoce collected Gwyn Parks’ chip ahead and dove over the line after cutting in from the right wing.

The mud-bowl conditions meant it became a challenge to distinguish between the two teams with players covered in mud from head to toe.

Warriors responded on 24 minutes when Reed received the ball at the back of a scrum on the blindside and dotted down close to the right touchline.

And Reed converted well from out wide to nudge the visitors into a two-point lead after Parks failed to convert Nottingham’s opening try.

However, Reed’s converted try would prove Worcester’s only score of the match despite the visitors piling on the pressure before the break.

Nottingham reclaimed the lead on the stroke of half time as Parks kicked a penalty to leave Warriors three points behind at the interval.

Parks saw another penalty attempt after the break miss the target before Warriors lost James Tyas to the sin-bin.

And Nottingham made the most of the extra man to score their second try on 66 minutes as James Cherry powered over from the back of a five-metre scrum.

The home side sealed the points three minutes from time when Harry Graham fielded a clearing kick and danced through the Worcester defence from distance to score under the posts.

Worcester are next in action against Cambridge on Saturday, March 21 with kick-off at 3pm at Sixways Stadium.
