AN ARCHER from Worcester won double gold representing Great Britain at the European Field Championships in Ksiaz, Poland.

Emelia Hughes starred in her first appearance at the prestigious competition as she won gold in the individual and mixed team events.

The Worcester archer has previously represented Great Britain eight times at youth level predominantly in target archery.

She won her first senior gold medal for Great Britain at the Veronica’s Cup in Slovenia earlier this year.

Hughes said: “I just can’t believe it.

“I was so nervous going into the last shot in the individuals, knowing that only hitting dead-centre and scoring a six would secure victory.

“It was a steep upward shot and the wind was gusting, but somehow I pulled it off.

“It’s incredible that I can now say that I am a double European champion.”

Hughes pipped Czechia’s Tereza Veverkova to gold in the under-21 women’s recurve event while Germany’s Frida Janke took bronze.

And she then teamed up with Edward Gray to win under-21 mixed team recurve gold, beating Slovakia and Czechia to top spot on the podium.

Great Britain finished second in the medal table with seven gold and four silver medals.

Just under 200 archers took part in the biannual event with 25 countries represented over five days of action.

Archery GB sent a 12-strong team to the European Field Championships in Poland.

The qualification rounds took place on two different 24-target courses.

Targets ranged from 20cm to 80cm diameters and distances from 10m to 60m.

And the archers then took part in head-to-head elimination matches based on their respective rankings.
