WORCESTERSHIRE CCC fell to a three-wicket County Championship defeat against Nottinghamshire despite a spirited final day fightback.

The visitors looked certain to take victory at New Road after dismissing the Pears for scores of just 182 and 160.

Nottinghamshire required just 136 runs for victory after reaching 207 all out in their first innings.

However, the Pears had the visitors in trouble on 83-6 as a five-wicket burst kept the home side in the contest.

Title-chasing Nottinghamshire eventually claimed a three-wicket win in a rain affected clash.

The result means Worcestershire remain bottom of the County Championship Division One table.

A half-century from Gareth Roderick (61) and a composed knock from Tom Taylor (40) proved the highlights of a difficult first innings for the Pears.

None of the club’s other batter went beyond the 20-run mark as Dillon Pennington (4-50) and Josh Tongue (3-59) did the damage with the ball.

All out for just 182, the Pears made the perfect start with the ball as Taylor (4-70) removed Nottinghamshire opener Haseeb Hameed (0) with the second ball of the away side’s reply.

A half-century from Freddie McCann (56) saw the visitors mount a recovery although Worcestershire took the final five wickets for the loss of just 34 runs.

Trailing by just 25 runs at the start of their second innings, the Pears once again showed their frailties with the bat with the hosts all out for 160 as Lyndon James (5-35) claimed a five-for.

Roderick (37 not out) top scored again and led a recovery with Ethan Brookes (26) when on 68-5 to set Nottinghamshire 136 runs to win.

Taylor (2-45) again removed Hameed (0) for a duck as the visitors started the final day on 40-1 needing 96 runs for victory.

However, Nottinghamshire slumped from 50-2 to 83-6 as the Pears refused to go down without a fight.

The visitors steadied the ship courtesy of Liam Patterson-White (23) before James (17 not out) and Tongue (14 not out) steered the away side to victory.

Worcestershire are next in action against Durham on Monday, September 15 with play to start at 10.30am at the Riverside ground.
