WORCESTER City moved closer to securing a play-off place following a 2-0 victory against 10-man Boldmere St Michaels.

A goal from Liam Lockett put City ahead shortly before half time at the Boldmere Community Stadium.

And Boldmere then had Charlie Manners sent off before Felix Miles sealed the points for Worcester in injury time.

The result means Worcester sit fourth in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, nine points clear of the chasing pack in the race for a play-off spot.

Boldmere went close to taking the lead when Nathan Oyemade’s free-kick from distance crashed against the crossbar and bounced to safety.

City responded with a chance of their own as Lockett cut in from the left and curled a shot a couple of yards wide of the post from 15-yards out.

And Lockett went close again soon after when he lashed an effort over the crossbar on the half volley.

The winger eventually broke the deadlock on 44 minutes as he latched onto Kyle Belmonte’s pass before driving into the penalty area and firing a low shot past Jonathan Brown at his near post.

Boldmere almost drew level in first-half injury time only for Dan Moore to make a crucial save when one-on-one after Kevin Ngombi jinked his way into the box.

The home side then had Manners sent off on 55 minutes after the Boldmere forward picked up a second yellow card after tangling with City goalkeeper Moore.

Worcester looked to make the most of the man advantage as Zac Guinan looped a header over the crossbar from six-yards out.

And Boldmere keeper Brown then denied Lockett as a scramble in the box ensued before the home side eventually cleared the ball to safety.

City somehow failed to doubled their lead later in the half as Brown superbly tipped Miles’ effort from 20-yards out onto the crossbar.

Belmonte headed the dropping ball into the path of Miles only for Brown to produce a stunning one-handed save to keep out the midfielder’s powerful half volley.

And the visitors spurned another chance to double their lead when Guinan slipped in Miles as Brown denied the midfielder with his feet.

City had the ball in the net late on only for Guinan’s clever flick from Belmonte’s pass to be ruled out for offside.

Guinan then used his strength to hold off a Boldmere defender and charge into the box as Brown clawed away the striker’s dinked effort.

However, City eventually made sure of the points four minutes into injury time as Miles lifted the ball over Brown from substitute Sopuruchukwu Obieri’s audacious lofted through ball.

Worcester are next in action against Darlaston Town on Tuesday, March 25 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Claines Lane.
