CRICKETERS from the University of Worcester are heading to Edgbaston this weekend to compete in the Super 8 Indoor Championship Finals.
The university’s men’s indoor first team have reached the finals of the British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition.
Worcester will take on Durham University, Bristol University and the University of East London in the group stages.
And should Worcester progress from the group stages, they will advance to the semi-finals later in the day and then hopefully the final in the evening.
A trio of players, Ollie Halion, Jevan Kher and Ritchie Harley, are all part of the team and are also studying for their master’s in cricket coaching and management at the university.
Captain Halion said: “I’m honoured to lead the boys on Saturday, we’ve put a lot of hard work into this, and I think the results will reflect this on Saturday.
“We’re looking to bring the silverware home with us to Worcester.”
Wicketkeeper Kher added: “We’re all really excited for Saturday, we can’t wait to get stuck in. We’ve trained hard and we’ve had the right attitude all the way through.”
Club chairman Harley said: “It’s great to be competing again in the finals of the Indoor Championship, we’ve got huge ambitions and expectations off the back of previous campaigns.”
Head coach for cricket, Alfie Marston added: “This is a massive day for the club, and the cricket programme at the university.
“This shows the hard work the boys have done to balance their studies and training, and competing this Saturday means they’re guaranteed to finish in the top-eight for indoor cricket in the country – a huge achievement for the players.
“Let’s hope they can secure a medal position.”
Senior lecturer in physical edutcation and UW sport performance and scholarship lead, Charlotte Beaman-Evans said: “The men’s cricket performance team continues to excel in national competitions.
“Their dedication and countless hours of training have paid off, and we’re extremely grateful for the wider support team, the performance analysts, strength and conditioning coaches and sports therapists, whose hard work ensures our athletes can continue to compete at the highest level.”
The action takes place on Saturday, January 25 at Edgbaston.
