WORCESTER City suffered a fifth defeat in their last six league matches after losing 2-1 against Sutton Coldfield Town.

A Luke McGinnell own goal drew City level on the stroke of half time only for Kory Burke to win the game for the visitors after James Beresford opened the scoring at Claines Lane.

The result means Worcester sit seventh in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, one point outside of the play-off places.

City made a bright start as James Wren kept out Elliott Hartley’s early effort following a quick counter attack before Adam Mace curled a free-kick inches past the post.

And the home side went close again soon after as Kyle Belmonte fired wide from the edge of the penalty area.

However, Sutton took the lead against the run of play on the half-hour mark when Beresford poked the ball past Haydn Whitcombe at the back post following a deep cross from the right.

City equalised at the end of the first half as Dylan Hart’s effort cannoned into the net off Sutton defender McGinnell.

And Worcester almost completed the turnaround shortly after half time as Belmonte saw his header cleared off the line before Hart fired the loose ball over the bar.

However, Sutton reclaimed the lead on 58 minutes when Burke volleyed a long throw into the net.

Sutton almost sealed the points late on as Charlie Wise curled a shot inches wide after bursting into the penalty area from Burke’s pass.

City had one final chance to draw level deep into injury time only for Liam Lockett’s free-kick to clear the wall and the crossbar.

Worcester are next in action against Long Eaton United on Saturday, October 12 with kick-off at 3pm at Grange Park.
