Celebrating a genius of satire

Worcester Editorial 23rd May, 2018   0

MASTER satirist Tom Lehrer will be celebrated in ‘Politically Incorrect’ – 90 minute show at Worcester’s Huntingdon Hall.

American musician, singer-songwriter, satirist and mathematician Tom Lehrer is best known for the pithy, humorous songs he recorded in the 1950s and 1960s.

Written more than 50 years ago, Lehrer’s songs and his irreverent attitude have survived the passage of time, though his satire is now perhaps darker and more politically incorrect than most of today’s wits would risk.

Lehrer’s early work typically dealt with non-topical subject matter and was noted for its black humour.

In the 1960s, he produced a number of songs dealing with social and political issues of the day, particularly when he wrote for the US version of the television show That Was the Week That Was.

In the early 1970s he retired from public performances to devote his time to teaching mathematics and musical theatre. In 2001 he retired completely and this year he celebrated his 90th birthday.

Pianist, vocalist and all round entertainer Peter Gill will relive the golden days of cutting satire and hear such gems as Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, I Got it from Agnes and The Masochism Tango.

The event starts at 7.30pm on Thursday, May 31. Call Worcester Live’s Box Office on 01905 611427 or visit www.worcesterlive.co.uk for more information.
