WORCESTER City chief John Snape has urged his side to focus on their performances between now and the end of the season after the Blue and White’s faint promotion hopes were given a huge boost.
City put the pressure on those around them in the race to join Bromsgrove Sporting at the promotion party with an impressive 3-0 win over Highgate United on Saturday.
The Warwickshire outfit then lost 3-1 at Sporting Khalsa on Monday and City’s 4-0 win over lowly Rocester on Tuesday evening put the Blue and Whites within a point of Highgate.
City round off their season with away trips to Quorn and South Normanton Athletic knowing two more wins will be needed to stand a chance of going up.
Saturday’s victory saw an end to end first half with chances for Dave Reynolds and Jordan Stoddart while former City man Marco Adaggio went close for the visitors just before the half-hour mark.
A fourth successive goalless first half ensued for the Blue and Whites and the second period began with Adaggio once again going close for the visitors but it was first blood to City on the hour-mark when Jamie Smith’s cross found Birley in a good position and he made no mistake.
In the wake of the goal, Highgate went close to grabbing an equaliser when George Curry’s effort hit the woodwork and Aaron Brown put the rebound wide.
The second goal did eventually arrive and the same three players were involved as Reynolds set Alex Tomkinson away and his ball found its way into the path of Turton who made no mistake.
Birley found Tomkinson in the closing stages and the midfielder made no mistake to seal the points and cap an afternoon to remember in the warm April sunshine.
Speaking after the game, Snape said: “I’m over the moon for Nick Turton, he came into the side during a transition when a few were going out the door the other way.
“His work-rate and effort has been fabulous.”
