Skipper Birch departs City as Snape brings in attacking trio

CASH-STRAPPED Worcester City have waved goodbye to skipper Brad Birch who has joined Stourbridge on dual registration terms until the end of the season.

The hard-working midfielder became City captain following Tyler Weir’s early season move to Hednesford and has made 27 appearances this season, scoring seven times.

Under the terms of the deal, Stourbridge can release Birch at any time to play for City should the Glassboys be without a game.

Further departures could take place before tomorrow’s deadline with rumours swirling about the future of a number of City players.

The Blue and Whites kick off five games in just 11 days tomorrow (Thursday) when they welcome Long Eaton United to the Victoria Ground in the Midland League Premier Division.

City’s continuing postponements at the end of 2017 combined with the recent cold snap mean the Blue and Whites face 12 matches in the next six weeks including a packed Easter programme.

A trip to Shepshed Dynamo next Thursday is followed by a return to the East Midlands to face South Normanton Athletic next Saturday before an Easter Monday clash at the Victoria Ground against Rugby Town.

Snape has strengthened his forward line with the addition of former Shawbury United stiker Ben Robinson who has scored seven goals in 30 games this season.

Robinson joins fellow newcomers Joel Ambalu and Nick Turton in the fight for attacking places alongside Dave Reynolds and Mark Danks.

Ambalu is a former West Bromwich Albion trainee who has also been at North Ferriby United, Torquay, Tividale, Alvechurch and Dudley Town, and he joins from Redditch United on a dual registration.

Turton, a former forward with Sporting Khalsa and Chasetown, joins from AFC Wulfrunians.

City go into the Long Eaton and Saturday’s visit of Boldmere St Michaels on the back of a 1-1 draw at Loughborough University.

Blizzard conditions blighted the clash and the Blue and Whites went behind against the run of play when Ben Last fired in a low strike that found its way beyond keeper Nathan Vaughan.

City’s pressure was finally rewarded with just under 20 minutes left when Alex Tomkinson was brought down by Last. Substitute Danks stepped up to coolly slot home to level matters.
