Santner’s return will add to quality attack

WORCESTERSHIRE Rapids assistant coach Matt Mason believes the New Road outfit have a pace attack to tackle the challenges of white ball cricket this summer.

Mason revealed his delight at the return of New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner for the NatWest T20 Blast.

And he believes the acquisition of Australian all-rounder John Hastings, currently recovering from patella tendon surgery, will be a fillip for the Royal London One-Day

Cup as well as the T20 Blast in addition to red ball cricket in the Specsavers County Championship.

“To have Mitchell Santner back is terrific. He will have a lot to prove after the frustrations of last year when he had to leave us early with a broken finger,” Mason said.

“He is a top quality performer. He fills that vital all-rounder’s role, is a gun fielder, a top quality spinner and a very good batter.

“He is a great addition plus the guys we’ve got in place already and with having John Hastings around, we’ve got a good looking squad for T20 and white ball cricket.”

The respected coach said Hastings would also add an extra dimension to the Pears attack as they bid for promotion from the Specsavers County Championship Division Two.

“I watched him at Durham for all those seasons and he just hits the length hard and he will get plenty out of those pitches,” said Mason.

“He will bring a certain level of aggression and competitiveness as well and, in white ball cricket, he has played international cricket so he is class there.

“Again he will be a great addition to our squad,” he added.
