Baldwin insists Quins defeat wasn't a step back

SCRUM-HALF Luke Baldwin believes Saturday’s loss to Harlequins was ‘a game that got away’ but insisted the defeat was not a ‘step back’ for the club.

The Tunbridge Wells-born player is adamant Warriors are still building momentum ahead of crucial Aviva Premiership fixtures against Saracens, Exeter, Northampton and Bristol, despite the narrow 28-22 loss in the Anglo-Welsh Cup at Sixways.

The defeat, which all but eliminates Warriors from the tournament, leaves the club bottom of the Pool 2 table on six points, with just one game remaining.

But Baldwin is confident the team will give Worcester’s travelling supporters something to cheer about when they bring the curtain down on the competition against Cardiff Blues this Saturday.

“In the first 15 to 20 minutes against Harlequins I thought we showed glimpses of what we’re capable of. We just need to build on that against Cardiff so we can hit the ground running ahead of the next block of four Premiership games,” said the 26-year-old.

“We’re obviously disappointed with the loss but I don’t think it’s a step back for us.

There was always going to be points in the game where each team gained ascendancy and Quins scored in those situations.

“It’s just goes to show the sort of teams we’re playing against each week and that any lapse in concentration can lead to mistakes that the other team will capitalise on.

“Credit to them (Harlequins) as they took their chances. Moving forward we have to look at managing those areas of the game where we’re under significant periods of pressure.

“Ultimately, it was a game that got away. We were in it right until the end. We’ve been in similar situation most weeks, so now it’s about pushing on and getting over the line to give the supporters something to cheer about.

“I’m looking forward to the Cardiff game as we’ve got more players coming back. We’ll have a strong squad on Saturday, so hopefully we can come away with a good result.”
