A UNIVERSITY of Worcester nursing student has kicked her way to a trio of bronze medals at the prestigious Shito-Ryu Karate World Championships in Mexico.
Jennifer Goddard, a black belt 3rd Dan who has been training as a martial artist since the age of 11, brought home the haul of medals with the Shito-Kai England team at the eighth annual competition in Monterrey.
“It was brilliant to meet and compete against the elite Shito-Kai members from around the world, and there was an amazing feeling of camaraderie between all the competitors,” said the 25-year-old.
“I was in a kata team which I really enjoyed, as winning something as a team is a great feeling. It was both exciting and nerve-racking to compete on such a big stage, but that’s where the years of experience make the difference.
“To have come home with three bronze medals was amazing. It has inspired me to train even harder, as standing on the podium receiving the medals was a feeling I’ll never forget.
“I hope to graduate with a good degree at the University of Worcester. My eventual goal within nursing is to become a GP practice nurse, but in karate, I’m aiming to take my 4th Dan examination and continue competing at tournaments. In the future I may consider teaching karate myself.”
