Academy ace Adams targets cup sides

ACADEMY winger Josh Adams has set his sights on Warriors’ Anglo-Welsh and European Challenge Cup teams after scoring five tries in the Singha Premiership Sevens.

The 21-year-old, who moved to the Sixways outfit from Llanelli Scarlets, made a habit of crossing the whitewash at Newcastle Falcons’ Kingston Park on Saturday, with a brace in his side’s opener against Leicester Tigers and a hat-trick in the win over the hosts.

Despite Warriors missing out on a place at the tournament’s Finals Day, the young Welshman believes the competition has boosted his confidence ahead of the new campaign.

“As a winger scoring is very important so it’s nice to get out there, stretch my legs and showcase what I can do in open space. Five tries is a nice bonus from that,” said Adams.

“But back-to-back games are pretty tough. You’re out there for 14 minutes going flat out and then several minutes later you’re straight back out for another 14 minutes. It’s very intense.

“It does take it out of you but obviously the first game let us down against Leicester so we can’t blame the consecutive games, because if we’d have won that first match we’d have been through.

“Going into the Sale game we were confident knowing we were top but it was one game too many. Sale were good, but a lot of fatigue crept in. Nevertheless it was a good day.

“It’s a big season ahead so I need to push on and get up the rankings to hopefully break my way into the Anglo-Welsh and European Challenge Cup teams,” he added.

Adams also praised some of the other younger players who featured in the sevens squad in Newcastle.

“The youngsters did exceptionally well. They stuck their hands up and fronted up against some big lads. They’re bright prospects for the future,” he added.
