Vesty thrilled to be backs coach

SAM VESTY has been named Worcester Warriors’ new backs coach following the departure of Shane Howarth last week.

The 33-year-old former Leicester Tigers back takes up his new role after 18 months as the club’s academy transition coach.

Vesty notably oversaw the Worcester Cavaliers side which progressed to the final of the Aviva A League and played a significant role in bringing players such as Ben Howard and Max Stelling to the forefront of the first team.

His impressive work at Sixways had reportedly attracted interest from Leicester but, with Howarth leaving the club by mutual consent, director of rugby Dean Ryan has quashed any speculation by offering Vesty a promotion.

Vesty said: “I am delighted to be taking up this new role at a club which undoubtedly has a very bright future and I am extremely grateful to Dean Ryan for affording me this opportunity.

“There is an array of gifted players at the club and the performances of the Cavaliers side earlier this season show there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the direction in which we are heading.

“I have enjoyed my time at Sixways immensely and I am looking forward to playing a key part in the development of our exciting back-line.”

Ryan added: “We continue to place an emphasis on developing young coaches at Warriors and Sam is somebody who has illustrated his commitment to grow within this environment and develop into one of the finest coaches in the country.”
