Flanker Cox suffers injury setback

FLANKER Matt Cox’s hopes of cementing his place in Worcester Warriors’ starting line-up have been dealt a blow after being ruled out of action for up to two months.

The 26-year-old badly strained his knee after he came on as a substitute during Warriors’ battle against Yorkshire Carnegie on Saturday, December 27.

Director of rugby Dean Ryan said he felt Cox, who has made eight appearances for Worcester since joining from local rivals Gloucester last summer, was beginning to push his claim for a starting jersey.

But the Warriors boss revealed the talented back rower now looks set to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines before he can battle it out for a place in the first team again.

“He has got a grade two strain on his knee, so it looks like it will take six to eight weeks before he returns,” Ryan said.

“Coxy is pretty frustrated because he made a big impact when he came on at Leeds and is pushing for a place.

“It’s won’t be long before he is back in and playing again, but he will be desperate to get back in the mix again.”
