Fans turn out in huge numbers to witness historic City win

MORE than 3,000 Worcester City supporters were on hand to witness one of the biggest giant-killings in recent seasons.

A total of 3,220 fans from the Faithful City, in a crowd of just 8,439, made the 50 mile trip to the Ricoh Arena to watch their side pull off a major cup upset.

And manager Carl Heeley paid tribute to the Blue and Whites faithful by dedicating the victory to them.

“I am proud of my players, all of the staff and all of those fabulous supporters who travelled in their numbers,” he said.

“They gave us a huge lift, everybody who maybe could have walked away when we lost our ground, but they’ve stayed strong to the club and it is all for them and I am just a little cog in that group of people that has made this happen.”

Assistant Matt Gardiner added: “I love the Worcester fans, they have been unbelievable.

“When we could see the ticket sales going we were telling the lads all the time and it has more or less been a home game today (Sunday), that’s how it felt on the side.

“Absolute credit to them.”

Experienced defender Wayne Thomas also praised the ‘unbelievable’ vocal support and said their fans spurred the team to the success.

“It’s been absolutely fantastic,” he said. “That’s probably the biggest crowd alone the majority of the lads would have played with.

“They got behind us from minute one, inspired the lads and put us on the front foot from minute one and I think anyone at the game would have seen we were the better team throughout.”
