Big guns to meet early

Worcester Editorial 25th Jun, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

THE TWO promotion favourites will lock horns on the opening day of the Greene King IPA Championship season as Worcester Warriors start their 2014/15 campaign with a trip to Bristol Rugby.

Dean Ryan’s men visit Ashton Gate on the first weekend in September and will welcome last season’s play-off runners-up to Sixways for the final clash of the regular season on Saturday, April 25.

Warriors’ first home game will see them take on West Midlands rivals Moseley before they head to newly-promoted Doncaster Knights and play-off semi-finalists Rotherham Titans in the first five weeks of the season.

The festive period will see London Scottish welcome Warriors to the Athletic Ground five days before Christmas, with a long trip to Leeds Carnegie their first clash of 2015.

With the Championship title the aim, Ryan’s side will face London Scottish, Leeds and Cornish Pirates, before the visit of Andy Robinson’s men, in their end-of-season run-in.

If Warriors secure a play-off place, the semi-finals will begin on the weekend beginning May 8, with the second leg the following weekend.

Anthony Glossop, interim chief executive, said: “The fixture list has handed us some exciting challenges at key times throughout the season, not least our matches with Bristol, who share our ambition of winning promotion next season.

“With our first home match of the season throwing up a West Midlands derby, we will be welcoming supporters, new and old, from right across the region to Sixways.

“The Greene King IPA Championship is a competitive league and we are all looking forward to a big season ahead.”
