WORCESTER Wolves director of Paul James has said the club’s two-legged BBL Trophy semi-final presents them with a ‘massive opportunity’ to make history.
The BBL club will look to make significant strides tonight (Friday) in reaching their first ever grand final when they take on Sheffield Sharks in the first leg of the semi-final.
The deciding second leg takes place on Wednesday (March 12) at the University of Worcester Arena.
Wolves go into the game having enjoyed their best season in the British Basketball League yet sitting top of the BBL Championship and in the last four of the BBL Trophy.
Should Wolves clinch victory over the two legs they will play in the BBL Trophy at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow facing either Cheshire Phoenix or Glasgow Rocks who meet in the other semi-final.
And James said reaching a grand final would be what the club’s owners and fans deserve.
“It’s a massive opportunity for the club,” he said.
“You look at the owners who’ve been involved for so long and they’ve never been to a final. The club also has got fans who have been there from day one who have never been there.
“The one thing that I stressed when I got originally arrived, was that to get to finals, you obviously have to get to semi-finals, first. We’ve done that three years in a row now and every time you do that, you give yourself a chance of getting to the final.”
Wolves will hope to erase memories of their last visit to Sheffield when they lost 83-64 in a league clash in November – just one of their four league defeats so far this season.
“That’s the one game we got beat where we didn’t play any sort of team basketball at all,” added James.
“We didn’t share the basketball. It was every man for himself and that was the game where if we look back, there’s no way we can do anything if we play like that.
“We have to play team ball. I think since then we’ve done a great job as we were unbeaten for almost three months.”
