Wolves thrilled by Couisnard capture

FORMER Leicester Riders star Jay Couisnard is making a return to the British Basketball League (BBL) as Worcester Wolves’ new signing.

Couisnard, who enjoyed plenty of success during his two-year spell in the East Midlands, is Wolves’ fifth signing of a summer in which the club is making ambitious plans to reclaim silverware.

The 27-year-old from Houston, Texas, made his BBL debut in 2012, coming in second place in the voting for the league’s ‘Most Valuable Player’ award during the Riders’ treble-winning campaign.

Wolves head coach Paul James said: “We had some big shoes to fill in the shooting guard position and, in signing Jay, I feel we have done exactly that.

“He is a very influential competitor and will impact our club in so many ways as he is a fantastic talent and has shown he is a winner.”

Whilst at Leicester, Couisnard led the Riders in scoring, averaging more than 16 points a game on 43 per cent shooting, while adding 5.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game.

In 2014 the 6ft 6in guard was tempted by a move to French side Union Basket La Rochelle, where he averaged ten points, four rebounds and two assists a game.

Wolves managing director Mick Donovan said: “There has been a recent trend of some of the top BBL players making the transition to Europe after successful seasons in our league.

“Whilst the signing of Jay is great news for the Wolves community, seeing top players returning whilst still in their prime also reflects very well upon the BBL.”

Couisnard joins fellow new recruits Ashton Khan, Malik Smith, Javier Mugica and Perris Blackwell, while Disraeli Lufadeju has been retained.

KHAN is a 6ft 1in guard who holds both Canadian and British passports and who graduated from America’s Tiffin University, where the 24 year-old averaged 12 points, four rebounds and four assists per game, whilst also shooting a high percentage from both the two and three-point range.

Khan said: “I’m incredibly excited to join the Worcester Wolves. I am aware of the success the club has had in the British Basketball League and I believe that I can continue the winning tradition on the court.

“I believe that my ability to distribute the ball and score at a high level will translate into wins on the court and silverware for our team.

“My father is from Great Britain, so this was a terrific opportunity for me to return to my parents’ home country and be able to play in the UK’s top basketball league.”

Head coach Paul James said: “Khan is another exciting player that we have added. He can create his own shot, but will work well within the team concept that we have.

“He is a tough defender with quick hands and I know that he is going to be a really good addition to the team.”
