WITH the Paralympics now in full swing and British athletes continuing the nation’s brilliant successes of the 2016 Rio Olympics, it is time to start considering who you believe should feature in the running for the headline Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards honour.

Sponsored by Bullivant Media – publisher of the Observer – the Sports Personality of the Year award will recognise an elite level athlete or sportsperson who is performing at the highest possible level in their sport.

This may be on the international stage, as part of Paralympics GB or Team GB, or representing their club on a professional level.

In contrast to the other award categories, the winner of the Sports Personality of the Year title will be determined based upon a public vote. Suggestions for nominees will be sent in by readers of Bullivant Media newspapers.

Former Worcester City star Sean Geddes won the 2015 award thanks in no small part to his FA Cup heroics as he helped his side to defeat Coventry City and also scored the world-famous ‘Rabona’ goal.

Upon receipt of his award, Geddes said: “It has been a great night. When they were giving a rundown of the finalists during the presentations of the other awards, I just thought it was amazing being mentioned alongside the other contenders, but to go on and win the award is unbelievable.”

Seven-time Paralympic champion Sascha Kindred OBE – a gold medallist this week in Rio – is among the previous winners of the award, alongside paralympian and three-time discus world record holder Josie Pearson and Worcester Warriors ace Chris Pennell to name just a few.

The Herefordshire and Worcestershire award winners will be selected and given a ‘golden ticket’ into the West Midlands Community Sports Awards to be held on November 30, when the top talent, dedication, projects and coaches from across the region will be honoured.

The prestigious Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards will take place on Wednesday, November 9 at Sixways Stadium and nominations for the various categories close on September 25.

There are still opportunities available for headline and hospitality sponsorship, along with award categories. Please contact Sarah Mackay on [email protected] for further details.
