Warriors keen to extend Grayson role

FORMER England fly half Paul Grayson has become an ‘integral’ part of Worcester Warriors’ coaching team according to director of rugby Dean Ryan.

But the Warriors boss insisted they would not be offering him a permanent position as he believed they did not need a full-time kicking coach.

Grayson, who was part of England’s World Cup-winning squad in 2003, has been holding kicking sessions every Tuesday at Sixways this season.

And Ryan believes the results of his work have been clear to see this season as Andy Symons notably converted all eight of Worcester’s tries against London Scottish on Saturday.

“Last season kicking was a proper conversation as week after week we could not kick at goal and week after week we were poor statistically,” Ryan said.

“But that’s not the case anymore and we have now got a kicker in Andy Symons who has hardly missed.

“That progress is down to Paul Grayson. Kicking is something which takes time and behavioural change and you can see that progress now.”

Ryan said he has been grateful of Grayson’s efforts and revealed the club were keen to continue their relationship beyond this season.

“Paul has been with us two years now, so yes (it is something we are looking to continue),” he said. “He is a good coach, the lads enjoy working with him and I think he is an integral part of what we are trying to do.

“But we have got to be realistic – kicking is not a full-time job unless you are with the national team.

“There is a responsibility that people have to practise things they have learnt, so it’s just having an ongoing accountability to someone who can support you doing a skill, which is what kicking is.”
