Warriors face first-ever trip to Russia in Cup

Worcester Editorial 9th Jul, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

WARRIORS will travel to France, Wales and make a first-ever trip to Russia in the 2016/17 European Challenge Cup.

Drawn in Pool Three of the tournament, the club will come up against Brive of the French Top 14, Newport Gwent Dragons of the Guinness PRO12 and Enisei-STM of the Professional Rugby League in Russia.

Brive finished eighth in the elite Top 14 last season and minnows Enisei-STM, who play in Siberia, won’t be taken lightly after winning two of their four 2015/16 Challenge Cup fixtures, which included the scalp of Newcastle Falcons.

Warriors will also have a reunion with former player and coach Ceri Jones, who is now a forwards coach at Dragons.

The Sixways outfit finished bottom of their pool last season with five defeats, losing twice to Gloucester and Italian side Zebre and one to French team La Rochelle.

Their sole 19-3 victory came against La Rochelle at Sixways in November.

Chief executive Jim O’Toole said: “We’re already looking forward to some exciting European games both at Sixways and on the road in the coming season.

“Our first-ever trip to Russia is something that will excite everyone associated with the club and it’ll be great to see our supporters cheering the boys on against Enisei-STM.

“We’ve had some memorable European matches in the past so we can’t wait to get our campaign up and running later this year.”

Rounds one to six of the competition will be played in October, December and January, with the opening fixtures to be played from Thursday, October 13 to Sunday, October 16.

The final will take place next May at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.
