Wanderers lose play-off final

WORCESTER Wanderers missed out on a place in National Three after losing 20-5 to Old Northamptonians in the Midlands One play-off final on Saturday.

Tries from Rory Seymour and Dan Napier saw the hosts to victory and ended Wanderers’ hopes of returning to the fifth tier of English rugby for the first time of asking.

Wanderers battled gamely but they were unable to establish any territorial foothold. Old Northamptonians, meanwhile, held the lions share of possession and opened the scoring with a penalty from Alex Ross.

They also grabbed the first try as Seymour raced through to register his 17th score of the season. But Wanderers kept their dreams alive and signalled thoughts of a revival with a try just before the break. Chris Griffiths went over following his side’s best spell of the game.

However, despite a bright opening few minutes to the second half, ON’s were quickly in their stride and extended their lead when Napier powered over from a driving line-out.

To Worcester’s credit the intensity did not drop as they fought hard in the remaining 15 minutes, but they were unable to breach the hosts’ defence and with the last kick of the game, Ross dispatched a penalty to trigger the celebrations.
