Underdogs City vying for cup upset

Worcester Editorial 8th Nov, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

WORCESTER City will compete in their biggest game for almost a decade tomorrow (Sunday) as they make the short trip to 1987 FA Cup winners Coventry City.

Carl Heeley’s men head to the Ricoh Arena for the first round game on an eight-match unbeaten run and having not tasted defeat since their 4-0 drubbing at AFC Fylde on September 20.

City have met the League One giants four times in the prestigious competition previously, in 1905, 1907, 1960 and 1983 with Coventry claiming three wins and Worcester just the one.

Victories over Rugby Town, Leamington and Greenwich Borough have so far secured the Blue and Whites more than £24,000 in prize money and set up the encounter with Steven Pressley’s men.

Mike Symons came off the bench to net a dramatic equaliser in Saturday’s 2-2 comeback draw at Leamington and will be pushing for a start after returning from injury.

Heeley will be hoping loanee star Jordan Murphy can continue his fine recent form after bagging two goals in three games and will be looking to top-scorer Daniel Nti to add to his five goal tally.

Experienced defender Wayne Thomas and Sean Geddes both started the game with the Brakes on the bench but are pushing for a re-call.

A total of 63 league places separate the two sides but in stark contrast to Worcester’s recent run of good form, Coventry are languishing at the wrong end of League One.

Pressley’s side have won just one of their last nine games, a 3-2 victory over Peterborough United, which included a run of six defeats in seven.

They did snatch a late 2-2 draw at Leyton Orient on Saturday and have won three of their six league games on home soil since returning to the Ricoh.

The club have confirmed there will be a minutes silence before the game and players will wear a poppy armband to mark Remembrance Sunday.

The game is a 2pm kick-off and fans can pay on the turnstiles for tickets.
