Selection is tougher than ever - Vesty

ACADEMY coach Sam Vesty believes his young guns have given director of rugby Dean Ryan a selection headache ahead of Worcester Warriors’ return to league action.

Youngsters Perry Humphreys, Max Stelling and Tiff Eden were among the scorers on Saturday as Warriors hammered Moseley 39-0 in the British & Irish Cup.

The victory at Billesley Common was their third successive in the competition, which has given Ryan a platform to showcase the club’s rising stars.

And Vesty is convinced a number of his talented crop of players, including stand-in skipper Jean-Baptiste Bruzulier, have made a strong case to be selected when Warriors’ Greene King IPA Championship campaign resumes on Friday, November 7 against Bedford Blues at Sixways.

“Selection will be very difficult for those next few group of games as there are plenty of players knocking on the door,” he said.

“I think there will be some tough calls for Dean and that’s what you need if you want a healthy club.

“I think JB (Jean-Baptiste Bruzulier) has led the team very well, but just to single him out would be difficult as lots of players have put their hand up.”

Warriors have already notched up ten tries in the B&I Cup, including three in a blistering five-minute spell before half time on Saturday.

But Vesty said he was just as impressed by the way his side defended as they did not concede a single point against Moseley.

“These bunch of guys have done the club proud over these last few weeks,” he said.

“In the second half Moseley were going down the hill with the wind behind them and we managed to keep them to nil points.

“Even though we were 30-odd points up at half time we never gave them an inch and that says a lot about this group.

“A lot of these younger lads play representative rugby or A League rugby where the games are really fast.

“In these last three weeks, the same group has been playing against big strong men who want to slow the ball down and scrum you to the ground, but we have managed to force our game on to them and cope with whatever they brought to the party, so I am really happy.”
