Ryan: We paid price for failing to take chances

WARRIORS director of rugby Dean Ryan admitted his side needed to be more clinical in their defeat to title-chasing Leicester Tigers.

But despite the result, Ryan said he was proud of his side’s spirited performance against a Tigers side that have lost just once at Welford Road all season.

“Playing without something hanging on the game is something we’ve had to come to terms with and we’ve got it wrong in the last couple of weeks, but we didn’t against Leicester,” Ryan said.

“We created six or seven good chances but we’ve just got to be a bit more clinical and nail them down. We were in the contest all the way through and looked sharp and very physical.

“I’m really proud of the side. We conducted ourselves in the way we should have. There was enough there for us to do some damage, but we just didn’t take the chances.

“You can’t come to Welford Road and miss opportunities, so we’re just a bit frustrated it ended the way it did,” he added.

Ryan also paid tribute to the influence of Francois Hougaard, who played his last game for Warriors this season as he is joining up with the South Africa Sevens team ahead of the Rio Olympics this summer.

“I thought he was great against Leicester. You could see his quality, especially when Tigers forced a period of pressure which was well-marshalled by him,” he added.

“He’s been fantastic since joining and we’re delighted he’ll be with us next season.”
