Humphreys revels maiden Premiership try

ROOKIE full back Perry Humphreys hailed his maiden Aviva Premiership try against Gloucester as a ‘special and unreal’ moment he would never forget.

The 21-year-old back rower, who joined Warriors’ academy in 2014, played the second half of the 23-23 draw on Friday night after Ben Te’o came off with a head injury.

The Lincoln-born youngster scooped up a loose ball in midfield just before the hour mark and darted towards the tryline whilst shrugging off a number of Gloucester defenders, including that of speedster Charlie Sharples, to dive over in the corner.

Having only ever featured for the Worcester Cavaliers and in Warriors’ Championship and cup matches, Humphreys thanked head coach Carl Hogg for giving him the opportunity to make his Premiership bow against Saracens and Gloucester.

“I only got told I was coming on a couple of minutes before playing. I saw Ben go off with the doctor and as I came out at the interval to warm up I was told over the radio I was going to be coming on, so I ran back down the tunnel to grab my gumshield and that was that,” said Humphreys.

“I was pretty nervous when I came on, but that try got me through the game. I couldn’t ask for a better first touch. Only having two minutes to prepare was probably for the best really. All the lads helped me out and got behind me, so I couldn’t ask for much more.

“The try itself happened all so quick really. As I picked the ball up and darted towards the tryline I saw Charlie Sharples and wasn’t too sure I’d get around him, but thankfully I managed to ground in the corner.

“It’s my first Premiership try so felt awesome. I remember everyone jumping on me to celebrate. It was such an unreal feeling.

“I’ve never played in front of a full crowd at Sixways before either, so it was extra special. Chris Pennell said he was very proud after the match and that means a lot to me as he’s someone I look up to here.

“I’ve just got to keep my head down now and work hard to make sure I’m there or thereabouts on Saturday.”

Warriors travel to the Recreation Ground on Saturday to take on Bath.
