Henry: Pears can go on to become a great team

A BRIGHT future lies ahead for Worcestershire, according to Kiwi paceman Matt Henry who has ended his spell with the county.

And the 24-year-old has revealed he would ‘love to come back’ for another spell at New Road after his extended stay as the Pears overseas star.

Henry was due to depart when South African pace ace Kyle Abbott arrived in June but he was allowed to stay because of a finger injury to fellow Kiwi Mitchell Santner ended the latter’s spell at New Road.

However, Henry finally flew out to South Africa on Saturday (July 16) for a training camp with the Black Caps ahead of a tour of Zimbabwe.

The 24-year-old has been a popular figure in the county’s dressing room during the past three months and made a sizeable contribution with ball and bat.

Henry signed off in style with match figures of 8-88 in the Specsavers County Championship triumph over Northamptonshire and 3-15 in the NatWest T20 Blast success over Midlands rivals Birmingham Bears at New Road.

“It was a fantastic way to finish. To have a four-day win as well as a T20 win against the big local rivals, it was a great way to sign off,” Henry said.

“I’ve really enjoyed the last three months. It’s been a lot of fun.

“It’s been testing at times, learning about different conditions, but I’ve really enjoyed my time and I think I’ve done my job and hopefully one day I’ll be able to come back and play some cricket here.

“It’s been fantastic, and I’ve really enjoyed county cricket as well and I’d love to come back at some stage,” he added.

Henry ended with 27 wickets from six appearances in the County Championship and feels he has reaped the benefits of playing in different conditions.

“I was happy with that (27 wickets). I was hoping to have a bit more success than I did. I’m happy with how it finished and I feel like I did a job,” he said.

“Also the more time you can spend playing cricket abroad in different conditions with different people, it is always good for your game.

“It is quite a busy schedule and there isn’t much time off and obviously when you’ve got such a busy schedule, you don’t really have time to train,” he added,.

The paceman praised the ‘great bunch of guys’ in the changing room as well the coaching staff led by director of cricket Steve Rhodes and bowling coach Matt Mason.

“There is a good bunch of up-and-coming players here and that is really positive sign,” he said.

“Yes, they are a young side but they’ve also gained a lot of experience and a lot of them played some great cricket and showed some great signs.

“Moving forward, they will shake off the tag of being ‘a young side’ – and just be a great team,” he added.
