Heem capture thrills Ryan

DIRECTOR of rugby Dean Ryan believes Worcester Warriors could attract more big name signings after snapping up New Zealand Sevens international Bryce Heem.

The exciting back, who can play at centre, full back or on the wing, will leave Super 15 giants (Waikato) Chiefs to join Worcester ahead of the 2015/2016 campaign.

Ryan described the signing of the 26-year-old as an “outstanding statement” of intent from the club as they aim to secure promotion to the Aviva Premiership.

And the Warriors boss believes it could lead the way to more players of similar quality seeing Sixways as a place to progress their career.

“I think this can be a catalyst for us,” Ryan said. “We are now a credible place for people to come and play and that becomes contagious, so it is key that we keep that momentum going.

“Being in the Premiership is a huge part of that, but for us to be able to do that outside of the Premiership shows that reputationally we are starting to get out there.

“To be in the same company as Sonny Bill Williams and make a conscious decision that he wants to be a part of what we are doing here is an outstanding statement.

“It is a great representation that we are now starting to move up the ladder in terms of credibility of a place to come and that was a major task from what we are doing.

“I think Bryce is the first of starting to move into a different market.”

Warriors have already put together a pacy back-line, including the likes of fleet-footed wingers Cooper Vuna and Tom Biggs, but Ryan believes Heem’s versatility will bring something different to his side.

“Hopefully we will be successful in the play-offs because if we are in the Premiership we will need more strength and people who can play at 13, 14 and 15,” he added.

“That will give us more flexibility around Ben Howard and Chris Pennell as well as Cooper Vuna, (Tom) Biggs, (Sam) Smith and I think that’s a really big opportunity for him.

“He is 6ft 4in and that’s a significant presence in any team.”
