Heartbroken Abbott departs Warriors

HOMEGROWN ace Jake Abbott has revealed his “heartbreak” at leaving Worcester Warriors after the club failed to renew his contract.

The 26-year-old, who progressed through Worcester’s mini junior set-up, has become an integral member of Warriors’ squad since making his debut in 2008.

The former Worcester Sixth Form College student went on to make 72 first team appearances as he helped Worcester secure promotion from the Championship in 2011.

However, after he sustained a serious knee injury last November, which ruled him out of action for the rest of the 2013/14 campaign, speculation about Abbott’s future had began as director of rugby Dean Ryan started putting his squad together for next season.

On Friday Warriors confirmed the flanker was leaving Sixways, whilst Abbott later admitted on Twitter he had not secured a move to a new club.

“I am heartbroken to be leaving Worcester Warriors,” he said. “It’s been a special journey from six years old to live a dream and play for this team.

“Thank you to all the loyal fans who’ve been there with us through all the ups and downs and thank you for all your kind messages today.

“I’m not sure what lies ahead for me now, but what I do know is I am fit and ready for a new challenge.

“Finally, I wish all my friends, team-mates and supporters I’ve had the pleasure of knowing at Worcester Warriors all the success they deserve.”

Ryan added: “Jake has been a fantastic servant to this club for a long time and has demonstrated the utmost professionalism.

“I would like to thank him for his efforts during his time at Sixways and wish him the best of luck in the future.”
