Decision to call game off correct - Heeley

MANAGER Carl Heeley has said the move to postpone Worcester City’s FA Trophy clash with FC Halifax Town was ‘the right decision’.

The referee deemed the goal-mouth in front of the South Stand terrace was unplayable, due to it being frozen, and decided to call the game off about 1.50pm this afternoon.

A pitch inspection didn’t take place in the morning and it was only when players and officials arrived at Aggborough that doubts were raised.

“It is frustrating,” Heeley said. “We are all here ready to go, Halifax have travelled, but in all honesty it’s a tough call because the pitch is perfect apart from the top goal.

“You are trying to guess whether three or four hours is going to thaw it out and unfortunately that’s not been the case but it is the right decision to call the game off.

“It is just frustrating because we want to play football, but you can’t do anything about the weather.”

City, who were looking to secure their 15th game without defeat with the visit of Town, will be hoping the problem is sorted for their crunch FA Cup replay with Scunthorpe on Wednesday.

Defender George Williams said: “When I left this morning I didn’t think there was a chance it could be called off so it is a little bit annoying but that’s football.

“Everyone wants to play, we all wanted to play today but it happens every year, it happens every season.

“You have to prepare games will get called off every now and again and now we will prepare for Wednesday’s game so we are not going home disheartened we will do something productive out of it.”

Connor Gater added: “It is a bit disappointing really, we are going to have to catch up on more games but at least we have a bit more rest for Wednesday. We were looking to win the game and go through in the competition but it’s all eyes on Wednesday now.”

The first round game is likely to be rescheduled for Tuesday, December 23.
