The Craig Gillies Column: Performances need to improve

TO HAVE three wins on the board is not a bad start from Warriors, but I don’t think the performances have been particularly convincing.

After losing in the dying seconds against Bristol, the boys have responded well with wins over Moseley, Doncaster and Nottingham. But I still don’t think they are playing as well as they can do, so the focus will have to be on their performances and not so much the results – and I am sure that will be coaching staff’s take on things.

Bonus point wins are important as they keep you high up in the table, but you also need to tighten up all the areas of your game because if you do that the results will come and you will continue to improve as well.

The last three weeks have also shown what this Championship season will throw at Warriors. As the relegated side from the Premiership you are the ones to get shot at and Worcester have found out that already.

For instance, Moseley played out of their skins, put their bodies on the line and defended like demons and that’s what they will be facing all season, especially when sides come to Sixways.

The last time we were in the Championship, I remember playing sides who came out and played totally different to what we had seen them produce in their previous two or three games – and that’s what Warriors are coming up against now.

Their next trip to Rotherham will be just as difficult. They traditionally have a big set of forwards and like to keep the game very tight. I would imagine that not much has changed over the years, so the guys should expect a tough match at Clifton Lane on Saturday.
