Worcester City 2-2 Hednesford Town

Vanarama Conference North

WORCESTER City twice came back from the jaws of defeat to earn a 2-2 draw in an entertaining encounter with Hednesford Town on Saturday.

Sean Geddes and Mike Symons cancelled out efforts from Nick Rushton and then Jack Thomas as Carl Heeley’s men put an end to their miserable run without finding the back of the net.

That drought stretched back to December 20, when City last picked up three points, and but for the linesman’s flag Wayne Thomas’ acrobatic strike would have secured another victory for the hosts late on.

Hednesford will still be reeling after having the win snatched from them on Boxing Day when the game was abandoned after 75 minutes at 3-0, but City proved a sterner test with the reprieve and secured another point to keep them in 12th place.

It turned out to be the worst possible start for Worcester as Town’s first attack of the game inside 60 seconds resulted in Rushton prodding home from close range.

With the current run Heeley’s side are on, it could have been easy for his team to capitulate after a horror start, but they responded well as Connor Gater crashed a shot with Dan Crane kept out.

And when Symons was brought down ten yards outside the box with 27 minutes on the clock Geddes stepped up to curl a superb effort into the top corner and add another stunning strike to his growing collection.

But Rob Smith’s men haven’t got themselves to the fringes of the Conference North play-offs via good fortune and eight minutes before the break Thomas showed real promotion quality to haul his side back in front.

Ben Bailey’s long throw was cleared by a combination of debutant Aaron Brown and Geddes only in to the path of Thomas who unleashed a stinging half volley which flew into the top corner.

An action-packed first 45 ended with Gater somehow blazing over the top after Crane had come out his area to clear a long ball from Thomas.

Since returning to the club last summer, Symons has failed to reach the heights of his previous stint, but with just 20 minutes left he did manage to bag his fifth goal of the campaign.

Ellis Deeney’s 25-yard strike deflected in to the path of the big striker who turned the ball home from a tight angle to level the scores once more.

And with just minutes remaining Thomas met a Kyle Haynes cross but was denied by Crane before the defender scissor-kicked home the rebound only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.
