City draw league giants Coventry in FA Cup first round

WORCESTER City have been given a stand-out tie in the FA Cup First Round after drawing 1987 winners Coventry City.

The Blue and Whites will provisionally travel to the Ricoh Arena on Saturday, November 8 after being drawn against The Sky Blues live on BBC2 on Monday (October 27) at St George’s Park.

City have met the League One side four times in the competition previously, in 1905, 1907, 1960 and 1983, with three wins for Coventry and just one for Worcester.

The club has already secured more than £24,000 in prize money thanks to victories over Rugby Town, Leamington and Greenwich, and Rich Widdowson, community director at City, believes the game will be a huge one for the club.

“It’s absolutely great for the club,” he said. “It is one of those where you either want a big club or a winnable game, what we didn’t want was an unattractive game and not get anything out of it so this game is going to be massive for us.

“We have got to go there with a positive frame of mind and we have to perform on the day.

“We are complete underdogs which is the opposite to Saturday when Greenwich came to Aggborough, we saw how well they did and we will be doing the same when we go to Coventry.

“We have got three or four experienced players at this level, but we also have players like George Williams, Ellis Deeney and Dan Nti, relatively young players who have got something to prove.

“They are all good players and will relish this opportunity.”

Mr Widdowson also praised the loyal Worcester faithful who regularly make the trip to Kidderminster and hoped the day would be a memorable one for them.

“It is a great reward for the fans who have stuck by the club and the people who still come to Aggborough, particularly those who volunteer behind the scenes,” he added.

“The good thing about the FA Cup is people want to know you and want to be involved. For lower league sides, like ourselves, it really is the magic of the cup.”

Ticket details will be confirmed once the date for the game is set.
