PROMISING athletes James Dipple and Ben Clarke will go up against some of the best track and field competitors in the country after starring in a regional competition.

The pair produced stellar showings at the Midlands Regional Schools’ Combined Events Track & Field athletics competition to seal a place at the nationals.

Dipple from Worcester was placed sixth going into the final event at the Pingles Stadium and Leisure Centre in Nuneaton.

But the RGS Worcester pupil, who was part of the Hereford & Worcester Schools’ junior boys’ team, emerged from a brilliant 800m to climb to second.

Ben Llewellyn finished 13th with 1,733 points and Tom Baker 17th with 1,492, but their team-mate Harvey Munro had to withdraw at the start of the week due to injury.

In the intermediate boys’ competition, Clarke from The Chase School in Malvern went into his last event placed second.

But a solid 1,500m run saw him seal the Midlands Championship title for the second year running with 4,304 points, which also means he will move on to the nationals.

Meanwhile, the junior girls’ team, who finished seventh in last year’s event, came third overall with 7,719 points.

Deanna Clarke from Nunnery Wood High School in Worcester finished tenth with 2,436 points, with Georgina Knott from Stourport High School placing 14th with 2,363.

Katie Harris, also from Nunnery Wood, finished 24th with 2016.

The intermediate girls’ competition saw Olivia Jones from Heathfield School, Wolverley, and Rachael Baylis from Chantry take part, with the latter finishing ninth with 3,455.

Meanwhile Linton Gardiner from Worcester Sixth Form College was representing Hereford and Worcester at the South West Regional competition in Yeovil.

He won the competition with a higher points total than he achieved as Midlands champion last year and will take part in the nationals where he hopes to improve on his third place from last year.
