WORCESTER’S MP has taken another step up the parliamentary ladder by securing a junior ministerial post.
Robin Walker was handed the Parliamentary Private Secretaries (PPS) role to the Secretary of State for the Environment and Rural Affairs, where he will support current secretary Liz Truss.
Mr Walker said how the agricultural brief was extremely relevant to Worcester and he was looking forward to addressing the problems his constituents have come to him with.
“I’m pleasantly surprised and very pleased,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to over do it, I haven’t been made a minister, it’s only a PPS but it does seem to be a step forward.
“At the start of this term in parliament I wasn’t expecting to be a PPS at all, I was very much focused on just learning the job and being an MP, so it’s nice to have that support and recognition.”
The city’s MP, whose dad was the equivalent of Secretary of State as DEFRAS minister of culture, also said how he was looking forward to working with Miss Truss.
“It will be an exciting role,” he added. “You’re there to support the minister with colleagues and support them in debate which I’m certainly looking forward to doing.
“She (Miss Truss) is a pretty impressive figure in that she’s been a minister in the education department and as education minister brought in compulsory financial education, which is something I very much supported and campaigned for.
“I wouldn’t say I knew her terribly well but it’s something that I’m looking forward to getting to know her better.”
