Worcester 10K attracts more top UK runners

TWO more of the country’s leading athletes will lining up with residents to run this year’s Worcester 10K event.

Anthony Whiteman and Angela Copson will be joining the runners at the starting line, along with Jo Pavey and Worcester-raised Jenny Nesbitt at the race on Sunday, September 20 which starts at Worcester Racecourse.

The two have been world record holders for best times in their categories in athletic events in the UK and abroad.

Whiteman recently made it though to the finals of the 800 metres at the British Athletics Championships in Birmingham and before taking part in the Worcester 10K will be competing in the World Masters Athletics Championships in Lyon where he will tackle the 800m and 1,500m events.

Last year, he took part in the city event with several members of his family.

“I am looking forward to returning to the Worcester City 10K as again it will be a family event for me, with three generations of Whitemans running,” he said.

“The course includes one of my favourite running routes along the Severn — it is a great event on many levels.”

Angela Copson only took up running nine years ago but the age of 68 has become one of the most successful athletes in the world for her age category.

In May, she set the world record in that age group for her time in the Manchester 10K.

She said: “I’m really excited about running in Worcester. I’ve heard great things about the event – I’m told that the route is lovely and that the enthusiasm of the spectators really spurs on the runners. And of course, the fantastic Jo Pavey will also be there, so I can’t wait to run in the same race as her.”

The day has been organised by Events of the North in partnerships with Worcester City Council.

Entry costs £25 and places on the Young Athletes Run are £8.
