A ‘GRIPPING, comic and deeply moving’ performance by one of the world’s best known living playwrights is set to be showcased at the University of Worcester next week.
Nottingham-based New Perspectives Theatre will be staging Athol Furgard’s Playland next Thursday (March 5) – a performance which is open to both students and members of the public.
South African-born Furgard is one of the most performed living playwrights, and has won countless awards and accolades in recognition of his extensive body of work.
He is known as a fearless chronicler of the history of his homeland; Playland is one of his most personal and rarely performed plays, and is set in 1989, when South Africa was still in the grip of Apartheid.
It tells the story of a travelling amusement park which has opened its gates in the heart of rural South Africa. Martinus, a black South African, is the amusement park’s night-watchman, while Gideon, a white Afrikaner and ex-serviceman, has gone along to the park for an evening out.
When they find themselves face-to-face, their encounter is charged with history and danger and the audience is treated to an inspiring, moving piece of theatre.
The performance will take place on the University’s St John’s Campus at 7.30pm, and – due to the strong language and descriptions of violent and sexual nature – is only suitable for those over the age of 16.
