Transport Secretary urges bid for Carrington Bridge funding

THE TRANSPORT Secretary has urged council chiefs and business leaders to bid for cash from the Government’s £475million infrastructure fund for the dualling of the Carrington Bridge.

Patrick McLoughlin’s comments follows a plea from Worcester’s MP Robin Walker in the House of Commons yesterday (Thursday), in which he said there should be ‘no wiggle room’ for the Government to approve the £70million Carrington Bridge project.

Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership and the County Council are currently working on a bid to the Local Major Transport Projects Fund- a pot of cash worth £475million- which local authorities can apply to for funding in order to carry out major infrastructure work.

The millions of pounds is also needed to make sure the ongoing work on the Southern Link road development continues, as it could grind to a halt with funding isn’t secured for the Carrington Bridge.

And last year the Transport Secretary did visit the city where business leaders, council chiefs and Worcester’s MP made the case for the Government to fork out the cash for the dualling of the bridge.

In Parliament, Mr Walker said: “The Local Major Transport Projects Fund could have been tailor-made for the Carrington Bridge and the Worcester Southern Link project, which the finest minds at the Worcestershire LEP are preparing a bid for.

“May I say to the Secretary of State and his team that there should be no wiggle room for the Government in approving this project.”

In response, the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, said: “The point that he makes about it being a suitable scheme for the local majors fund is certainly one that should be considered.

“I urge the LEP and the local authority to ensure that they put in an application for it to be considered.”
