THE UK’s population have been turned into grains of rice at a city church as a theatre company aims to serve up a thought-provoking performance.
The St Martin’s Parish Centre in Worcester has been displaying Stan’s Café’s work, called Of All The People In All The World (UK) since Monday (July 28) as part of this week’s Three Choirs Festival.
A group of professional actors from the Birmingham-based theatre company have weighed out rice onto labelled sheets of paper in a bid to represent a number of statistics, including the population of the UK.
They have also separated rice into piles to show the size of Worcester Warriors’ team beside the capacity crowd in Sixways Stadium and the number of city schools next to the amount of doctors in Worcester.
James Yarker, director at Stan’s Café, said: “It’s one thing to know that a little over seven million people live in London, but to see a huge mound of seven million grains of rice is something else again, something much more powerful.”
