A WORCESTER cancer survivor is urging women to take part in Race For Life to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Ann Ryland is rallying people to get involved on Sunday, May 31 in what will be her third 5k for the charity since her breast cancer diagnosis in 2012.

The 55-year-old found a lump which she did not show her GP until after her holiday, the doctor quickly referred her for further tests.

“I was absolutely terrified when they said the word ‘cancer’. My world just came crashing down, but I had to pull myself together. They told me I would need surgery first, then chemotherapy and radiotherapy,” she said.

During the surgery they were unable to find the primary tumour and Mrs Ryland was told she had a form of occult breast cancer.

Her husband was then involved in a serious accident which caused a bleed on his brain.

“It just felt very unfair. Going through the cancer was already hard, and then my husband was suddenly in hospital. It was a horrendous time, but somehow we got through it,” she added.

She had to wear a wig during her previous 5k after losing all her hair to the treatment. This time she will running with her eight-year-old granddaughter, Grace.

“Grace and I are really excited about doing Race for Life this year. Thanks to research more and more people like me are surviving cancer, and with our help Cancer Research UK can help even more people beat it. So I’m urging the brave ladies of Worcester to join us in pink army and show cancer who’s boss.”

Worcester Racecourse will hold the event which involves a 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy run and marathons.

Last year nearly 3,000 women took part raising more than £160,000.

Jane Redman, Cancer Research UK’s Worcestershire spokesperson, said: “Our aim is that one day everyone will beat cancer. The more research we can fund, the sooner that day will come – so ladies, it’s time to pull on your leggings, join the pink army and get ready to Race for Life.”
