Staff power up peaks

A GROUP of energetic Worcester employees was on a high after powering to the top of the UK’s tallest mountain.

Timothy Wynn-Jones, Helen Monkton, Jo-Anne Yeoman and Faye Parker joined 37 other npower workers to scale Ben Nevis last week.

The challenge was all part of the energy supplier’s ‘10 for 10’ campaign, which was set up to mark its ten-year partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Worcester-based team managed to raise £7,800 for the charity, but manager Helen said the climb did not come without its problems as they battled through strong winds and rain to reach the mountain’s 4,409 ft summit.

“I’m petrified of heights and was scared I’d be a crying mess the higher we got up the mountain, so reaching the top certainly made it worth it,” she said.

“If I can do this, then hopefully it’ll help others take a step out of their comfort zone and do something to get involved and raise money too.

“My uncle died from cancer and received support from Macmillan’s services. I was so impressed how Macmillan cared for my uncle – not only did they help him in his last few weeks, but they provided the whole family with support.”

Clare McDougall, head of community at npower, said she was delighted to see her colleagues help to make a positive impact on those living with cancer.

“As we can see, Macmillan means a lot to the people of npower, and the fact that we’ve already raised over £85,000 this year for this life-changing charity is testament to that,” she said.

“As cancer and its treatment can result in people feeling the cold more, we’ve worked with Macmillan on our joint Fuel Management Programme which takes away the anxiety of energy bills for thousands of cancer patients – helping them to keep warm and concentrate on recovery without the worry.”
